Dr. Jen McConnel is currently an assistant professor of English education at Longwood University. Her research focuses on supporting teachers and centering their voices across contexts.

As a former ELA teacher, beliefs and practices surrounding literacy are central to her work. Most recently, her research has emphasized the emotional component of writing in secondary and post-secondary contexts, as revealed by student and teacher metaphors for academic literacy.

She also researches the ways in which children’s and young adult literature can be used in K-12 classrooms to serve a variety of instructional purposes, with particular attention to diverse texts.
